Military Formal DJ at Humboldt 1854 in Crocker, Missouri
I recently had the opportunity to DJ a military formal at Humboldt 1854 in Crocker, Missouri, and it was a great night with a little bit of everything.
The evening started with a social hour before moving into the formal program and military traditions. Later, the room completely changed gears as everyone got a chance to relax, hit the dance floor, and celebrate together.
Military Formal at Humboldt 1854
Humboldt 1854 provided a great setting for the evening. The space worked well for an event that needed to feel polished and respectful during the formal portion while still being able to turn into a party afterward.
The class sent me a playlist ahead of time to give me an idea of the music they enjoyed. That's always helpful because it gives me a starting point without locking the night into a predetermined list of songs.
For social hour, I kept things laid-back and familiar while everyone arrived, grabbed drinks, visited, and settled in for the evening.
Handling the Formal Program
The formal portion of the night included several important traditions, including the National Anthem and Taps during the fallen soldier ceremony.
Those are moments where my role as the DJ is very different from what it will be later on the dance floor. Everything needs to be prepared ahead of time, the audio needs to be ready when the cue comes, and the focus needs to remain on the ceremony.
Sometimes being a good event DJ means knowing exactly when to bring the energy. Other times, it means knowing when to stay completely out of the way.
Once the formal program concluded, we were able to gradually change the atmosphere and get into the party portion of the evening.
From the Formal Program to the Dance Floor
This crowd had a pretty wide range of musical tastes, which made the night especially fun to DJ.
We bounced through country, throwbacks, 2000s hip-hop and R&B, line dances, Southern rap, current music, and plenty of requests.
That's exactly why I like getting some musical direction before an event while still leaving room to read the crowd.
A playlist can tell me what you like. The people standing in front of me tell me what I should play next.
Throughout the night, I was able to move between different styles depending on what was working in the room. Instead of trying to make the crowd fit a standard event playlist, the music followed where they wanted the party to go.
And this group was definitely ready to have a good time.
DJ Services for Military Formals and Private Events
Weddings are a big part of what I do, but Jazzy Josh DJ & Events isn't limited to weddings.
I also provide DJ and MC services for military formals, private parties, school events, corporate events, reunions, and other celebrations throughout Missouri.
Every event gets handled a little differently.
For this military formal at Humboldt 1854, that meant starting the evening with laid-back social music, being prepared for important ceremonial audio cues, and then switching gears later in the night when it was time to celebrate.
That's one of my favorite things about this job. No two crowds are exactly alike, and they shouldn't all get exactly the same party.
